Surrendering to God

Most christians are aware that they need to surrender to God; to His process. But it doesn't mean it feels easy. The human mind has been trained to be independent. To move consistently, trying to execute what they need, to get to where they want to. They make plans, meet people, ask questions, burn the midnight candle -- all in the effort to execute their dreams. These things aren't bad in themselves, but when they are done without God they could be futile. Proverbs 19:21 states "Many plans are in a man's mind, but it is the Lord's purpose for him that will stand". So we could plan all we like but if we don't do it with God, we'll plan in vain.

Sometimes, even after having understood the plans of God, it takes further courage to trust those plans. To truly surrender to them.

How then can we grow in our surrender to God?

Surrendering requires faith

It takes faith to surrender to the voice of God. Whenever you encounter God's voice it feels like a gentle tug in your heart, sometimes an impression. I use voice here not just to mean a physical loud voice or literal voice speaking to you in the way we humans understand it, but simply understanding God's language well enough to perceive Him. You see, God's primary language is not a literal voice speaking your language. He doesn't speak in the way we most times understand speaking. He speaks in different ways. Sometimes it could be a feeling, a "green light" or "red light" so to speak. Maybe you just don't feel comfortable taking a certain trip or you just don't feel like someone is trustworthy at the moment. It could be a dream, something interesting communicated to you. It could be a thought accompanied with an inner peace. It could be a knowing -- a sureness in your heart. You just know. All these are ways that God speaks to us. They key is to understand how God speaks to you overtime such that you and God are in tune. When you perceive the voice of God it takes faith to walk in it. You have to trust the Lord. Sometimes people struggle with this because they don't know God. You see God is your father, and not father as you understand earthly father. But father as connoted by the Word "Abba". He is your Abba, He wants you to succeed and have good success (Josh 1:8, 3 John 2).

You see, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10:17). The more you learn about God in the Word, the more you grow in your revelation of who He is, and the more your faith will grow. The more your faith grows the easier it is to surrender to Him.

Surrendering is easier when you understand God's love

It's easier to trust someone who cares about you. Does God care? He absolutely does John 3:16, John 15:13. As a matter of fact He is the full personification of love itself. He is LOVE (1 John 4: 16). You probably know this or have heard this especially if you're a Christian. So you might say I know this but it just doesn't make it any easier to surrender. I'll present to you that knowing it in your head is different from knowing it all the way down in your spirit man. Sometimes we might know a portion of God's love but don't quite have the level of revelation we need for our season. This is why Paul prayed consistently in Eph 3: 16 -19 that we might be rooted in the love of God and have a revelation of His all surpassing love. You see knowing the love of God doesn't just happen once, it happens daily. It is so big we cannot fully grasp, so our hearts cry should be "Lord help me to grasp your love!". As you grow in your understanding of God's love, surrendering becomes like your next breathe. It becomes a gentle dance between father and daughter, an understanding between papa and kin, a love relationship.

In summary, surrendering gets better when you know the voice of God, know Him as a person and know His love for you. I encourage you to desire these this new year and run in pace with the one who is in awe of you.
